"And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness." -Acts 4:31
Prayer is a powerful tool I learned as a child and grew to understand it more as I became older.
Prayer was what I did before I ate and before I went to bed. As I think back to my time in college I would go out to party, come home at all hours of the morning (most of the time drunk), yet I could not bring myself to go to sleep until I prayed! I don't remember what was coming out of my mouth most of the time, but it was my five minute nightly prayer.
I had a crazy obsession with the book "Left Behind" and read the entire series when I was a teenager, so I had a fear that I would get left behind if I didn't pray before I went to sleep. Growing up, my mind-set of prayer may have always been single-minded, but as I have gotten older I have learned the bigger effect that prayer has with unity.
For the past few days God has been teaching me about the importance of prayer, but not just any prayer, a unified prayer. Many times we think "I'm good all by myself!" or "God and I are fine and we don't need anyone else!" The effect of prayer is more powerful and monumental when believers come together praying on one accord. It literally says in the Bible, where two or more are gathered in my name, I am in the midst. When we come together with others to pray regarding an issue in unity, declaring that it is resolved in the Name of Jesus, it has no choice but to be resolved (when it is of course within God's will)!
The word of God is a compass for us to use in life, but prayer is the tool that we use to make sure that our journey is one of peace, joy and victory. Our journey was never meant to be traveled alone. God has put certain people in our path that are to uplift and encourage us along the way. They are also meant to be the spiritual family that comes together in prayer to make a bold declaration and change the atmosphere of our lives and the lives of others!
