Pruning Season

"I am the true Vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that continues to bear fruit, He [repeatedly] prunes, so that it will bear more fruit [even richer and finer fruit].  -John 15:1-2 AMP

Have you ever gone through a period of your life when it seems as though if it ain’t one thing it's another?  It doesn't necessarily mean that things in your life are bad, it just seems as though a lot’s happening all at once and it feels overwhelming. This period of time can make you feel worn out, anxious, and/or drained. But recently I’ve learned that this season of life may be uncomfortable, but you should be grateful for the experience .

In the above scripture, Jesus tells his disciples that when a tree does not bear fruit he takes it away. On the contrary, he will prune the trees that he sees are bearing fruit. The word "prune" means "to trim by cutting away dead or overgrown branches or stems, especially to increase fruitfulness and growth." In life we are like the trees! When we are obedient to what God is telling us to do and allowing him to take the wheel in our lives, we will bear fruit. Bearing fruit is a metaphor for building God's kingdom. When we aren't living our lives for Christ (or even willing to try), there is nothing for God to work with within us to build his kingdom.  It's as though we are useless trees dried up and not able to provide fruit for others. However, when God sees that we are using our lives to build his kingdom by being a light in this world for others, he recognizes that there is a fruitful harvest coming from us. He then begins to work on the areas of our life that need a little fine tuning so we can be prosperous, and full of joy and peace.

In the process of this pruning and fine-tuning we find ourselves at a place that feels uncomfortable and at times overwhelming, but it is truly a honor because we are actually being prepared for a greater harvest. The fact that God sees the greatness inside of us and is taking the time to invest in pruning us for growth is a blessing!

The next time you’re thinking of giving up or backing down because you feel overwhelmed or stretched, understand that you are just at a state of growth and that your preparation is vital to your fruitfulness!
