A wise person once told me “you’ll never know that you're walking in darkness until someone flips the light switch on.” You’ll see the things that you never saw before and how much of a mess you were living in before the lights were turned on in your life. It was a lesson that I know all too well because I am a product of a having a light switched on in my life. It was a moment of harsh reality, yet one of the most liberating times of my life.
As a child I grew up in a christian household. I went to church every Sunday and Wednesday night with my family. My parents were heavily involved in the Audio/Visual Ministry at my church so I lived behind a sound board with my dad and the producers screen with my mom. My parents made sure to teach my siblings and I about the Bible and how to live a life pleasing to God, so it was instilled in me at a young age. But as I got older and went to college, many of those morals took a back seat to what I wanted to do in life. During my Freshman year I hung out with the wrong crowd and found myself caught up in bad situations and witnessing crazy things that I shouldn't have. I learned quickly to be aware of who I surrounded myself with and who I allowed in my space. My senior year, I started seeing a guy that I knew was not the best person for me and found myself once again in crazy situations, making bad decisions, and constantly in a state of confusion about life.
Once I moved to New York and had my rock bottom moment, I began to realize that this "up one minute, down the next" spiral was getting old and I was ready to make a change. I found myself in a desperate place wanting more for my life and needing God to show me where I went wrong. I asked and He answered! God flipped the lights on and showed me everything that I did wrong in the past and how I could avoid making the same mistakes in the future. He literally made it so clear to me! I wish I could say that all was great in my life after I received this revelation and took the advice that was given to me, but I didn't. I still made mistakes and bad choices here and there, but this time I quickly recovered. It was as if HE made sure I now had new knowledge and wouldn't put it to waste. It wasn't until about a year or so that I put his advice fully into play for my life, and allowed my life to be lit for God. It was a choice that I am forever grateful that I made.
Having the lights turned on in your life can be a big wake up call, but it is necessary! The things that once seemed foggy become clear, and the blueprint for your life is now visible. You don’t have to hit rock bottom...just ask God to turn on the lights in your life! Once you understand where God is taking you and know that he’s walking beside you every step of the way, you will want nothing but light for your life and others!
