Victory in Words

“That same night the Lord said to Gideon, Arise, go down against their camp, for I have given it into your hand. But if you fear to go down, go with Purah your servant down to the camp. And you shall hear what they say, and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” -Judges 7:9-11

Have you ever been told by God to do something seemingly crazy and you decide not to do it because either the request did not make logical sense or you thought it would be too much to handle?  I’m sure we’ve all found ourselves in this position and have wondered later “what if I had been obedient and did what I was told….what would have happened?”

Earlier today I was reading about Gideon in the Bible. We’ve recently been talking about him at church and I wanted to get more of an understanding of all that he did and how I could learn from him. Gideon was called a “Mighty Man of Valor” by God. Although he didn’t feel as if he was mighty, or by society standards look like someone that would be called “mighty”, but God told him he was.  He was told to go to battle with the Mideonites and Amalekites, and through God he would win the battle. Before going to battle, God allowed Gideon to be strengthened and have confidence in the word he had given him by allowing him to overhear the Mideonites and Amelikates speaking about a particular dream that one of them had. The dream was translated by someone in the camp as a sign that Gideon would defeat them and their entire camp…which was exactly what God had told Gideon in the beginning.

Many times we do not understand why God calls us successful, when we are in a position that is far from it, or why he says that we are warriors when we sometimes feel as if we want to give up and go hide in a corner. It is because he is declaring what he sees within us. Many times he also gives us small glimpses of who we are along the way through signs or prophecy, so that we can be strengthened and encouraged and to know and believe that his word is true. Our only job is to be obedient and believe!
